Little Cypress teen wins big honor at State Fair of Texas

LITTLE CYPRESS — Winning livestock contests is becoming a regular occurrence for Madison Miller.

Madison, a ninth-grade student at Little Cypress-Mauriceville High School, traveled to Dallas, Texas, recently to compete in the State Fair of Texas livestock competition and walked away as the Champion of her classification with her pig, Todd.

In the spring of 2011, Madison claimed the title of Grand Champion in the Swine division with her pig, Squat.

Madison and Todd won the Market Barrow Hampshire division in her first attempt at the State Fair competition. A total of 149 Hampshire market barrows competed in four classifications which were determined by weight of the swine.

“Going into this competition, we were just praying to make the auction,” Madison said with a laugh. “We got really worried when we found out what classic we were in because Todd was showing against pigs that were 15 pounds heavier than him, and they only take five pigs from each class to auction. I never expected to make the auction, much less win the Grand Champion.”

Madison and Todd competed against approximately 35 other pigs in her classification, then she and Todd had to go head-to-snout with the three other winners from the remaining Hampshire breed classes.

After claiming the title of Grand Champion for the Hampshire breed, Madison and Todd had advanced to the next round to compete against six other pigs for the title of Grand Champion swine in all breeds.

Madison said two other pigs won the titles of Grand Champion and Grand Reserve Champion, but she was not upset about the outcome.

“We did better than I hoped, so we were all really happy,” she said.

Now, after being so successful with another animal, Madison is ready to begin the process once again.

“We’re looking to buy some more animals after my sister (McCartney) shows hers later this month,” Madison said. “Maybe in November we’ll get some more pigs, but I’m not sure yet.”
