OISD names McAlpin as assistant superintendent

ORANGEFIELD — Less than two weeks after announcing its lone finalist for superintendent, the Orangefield Independent School District has selected its assistant superintendent.

Shaun McAlpin, the principal of Orangefield High School, was promoted to Assistant Superintendent of Schools for the Orangefield Independent School District during a meeting of the Board of Trustees on Monday, June 11. McAlpin will spend most of his time in new position dealing with district finances.

“I’m really excited about this opportunity,” McAlpin said. “You never know when a job like this will come your way again, so when the opportunity presented itself, I made sure I was ready.”

McAlpin, 34, is a graduate of Orangefield High School and has spent the past 12 years employed with the district. His career began as an athletic trainer for three years in the district before becoming assistant principal at Orangefield Elementary for two years.

He then moved to Orangefield High School where he worked as assistant principal for two years and the past five years as principal.

Although his contract as principal does not end until June 30, he will begin serving in his new capacity very soon while continuing his duties as principal at the campus.

“I will definitely have a ‘blended’ job for the time being,” McAlpin added. “Anytime you make a transition within the same district, you are wrapping up loose ends at one position while beginning work doing the other.”

Nancy Ashworth, president of the Orangefield ISD Board of Trustees, said the school board feels McAlpin is the right person for the job.

“Shaun has an incredible work ethic and has proven his ability as a leader during his time as principal at Orangefield High School,” Ashworth said. “He has proven capable of handling the responsibilities, so we felt he was the right person for the job.”

Ashworth said the district likes to promote from within when possible, which is what it did with announcing McAlpin as the new assistant superintendent on Monday, along with OISD’s new athletic director and head football coach, Josh Smalley. The district also promoted from within on June 1 when the Trustees announced Dr. Stephen Patterson as the lone finalist for superintendent.

The district has several openings remaining, including the principal and assistant principal’s positions at the campus since assistant principal Jacqueline Kyle retired recently.

“That will be one of our next tasks,” Ashworth added. “We need to get a new principal and assistant principal in place very soon. We have several employees with the proper certification, so maybe one of them will be ready for the next step.”
