VISD stadium lights project running behind

VIDOR — A construction project which began in November and was expected to have been completed by now is running behind due to a wetter than expected winter.

The Vidor Independent School District began a work project in mid-November 2012 to renovate the track and stadium lights surrounding Ivan Croak Field at Pirate Stadium on the Vidor High School campus. A wetter than anticipated winter courtesy of what seems to be weekly storms, has left the project running behind.

“This rainy season has just killed us on this project,” said Dr. Jay Killgo, Vidor ISD superintendent. “Our goal all along has to get this project completed by the time we were set to host the track meet, but I don’t know if we will be able to get it done in time.”

Killgo said the removal of the old track and installation of the new track, including striping, has already been completed. The second phase of the project, the installation of the new bigger and brighter stadium lights, is under way.

“The poles were just installed in the ground this past week,” Killgo added. “The crews are trying to run the electrical wiring now, but they can’t do much in this rain. We need some sun to dry things up and several days of good weather to even have a hope of catching up and getting this thing done in time.”

Vidor High School is scheduled to host the Pirate Relays on Friday, March 1, which will include participation by several local teams. Killgo said if the lights project cannot be completed on time, the district may have to consider other alternatives, including relinquishing the meet to another school to host the event.

Since Dec. 1, 2012, a total of 16.14 inches of rain has fallen across Orange County, including nearly half that total in January, and more is on the way. According to Kent Kuyper of the National Weather Service in Lake Charles, La., a cool and wet forecast is in the works for Monday and Tuesday of next week.

“It looks like this is the pattern we are dealing with for the foreseeable future,” he said.
