Friday’s death of a Vidor man at the hands of his former stepson has been the big story in Southeast Texas this week and for a very good reason.
Kelly Gene Mitchell, 43 and of Vidor, surrendered to authorities Tuesday in connection to the shooting death of Rodger Dale Allen. Mitchell later paid bond and was released.
A probably cause affidavit detailed the two men’s dispute which led to Allen wrecking into Mitchell head on in his truck and eventually Mitchell shooting his former stepfather five times with a rifle.
Allen’s death is a tragedy no matter the situation. A human lost his life last Friday.
Now this story could very easily destroy two lives if Mitchell is indicted and then convicted on murder charges.
A grand jury will decide if Mitchell is to be indicted for killing his stepfather. The Vidor Police Department has reported he confessed to the man’s death.
It is up to the grand jury to decide if what Mitchell did was murder or if he acted in self defense.
This grand jury must at all cost, like every grand jury should, review each and every piece of evidence with a clear mind.
Mitchell’s case will be watched very closely throughout the area and even the state.
No matter what the decision is on Mitchell’s possible indictment, we only want justice in this case.
