PINEHURST —
The city of Pinehurst is planting Crepe Myrtles along Strickland Drive as part of beautification projects.
A portion of the funds for the trees came from a $2,500 grant from Keep Orange County Beautiful.
“A business owner called asking why one was not right in front of her business,” City Administer Joe Parkhurst said. “She is interested in buying left over trees so she can plant one in front of the building as well as lining the driveway with Crepe Myrtles.”
Parkhurst said that was one example of the positive responses he has received about the trees.
“The trees should be in bloom from June through September this year,” Parkhurst said. “In three years, they will be three times as pretty.”
Parkhurst also said the city is dependent on the Ike 2.2 funding for the Sewer Rehab project.
“Even being on the emergency/priority list, it will be sometime this summer before we get the funds,” Parkhurst said.
The lift pump at the 41st station is not working. When there is significant rain the 34th Street station will back up.
“Part of the problem is the items people are flushing,” Parkhurst said. “Rags, trash and so many other items are being flushed causing the pumps to become clogged.”
The city hopes to eliminate the problem by field testing a new pump. The pump will be able to break items down to help eliminate clogs at the station.
“It is a constant thing for us to have to send someone out to unclog the pumps,” Parkhurst said.
Councilman Dan Mohon said that this was something the city needed to get corrected.
“We can’t have this,” Mohon said. “This is why people pay taxes.”
Parkhurst said the City of Orange has sent their pump truck to help out when Pinehurst has need assistance.
