ORANGE —
Sometimes it is good to break from the old traditions and start new ones.
Changing traditions is what The Heroines of Jericho and their Knights did this year during the annual Christmas dinner on Saturday.
The Heroines of Jericho is an androgynous degree conferred in America on Royal Arch Masons, their wives, mothers, widows, sisters and daughters. Males who receive the Degree are called “Knights of Jericho.”
Traditionally, the group would exchange gifts between members during the annual dinner. This year, the group decided it would be more beneficial to spend the funds on blankets.
Most Ancient Matron Rutha Clark said they have a dollar limit on what to spend for the gifts exchanged and used that as a guide for how much to spend on blankets.
“We decided to help the needy instead this year,” Clark said. “It is best to help those in need and we are able to get more community work done.”
The group hopes to continue this new tradition every year. If not with blankets, in a way to help those in need within the community.
Clark said her son, Joshua Pitre, a Knight, helped with the planning for the event.
The blankets were delivered to Orange Christian Service Center on Monday.
Anyone needing a blanket could contact Orange Christian Services and proceed with the client application process. For more information about obtaining blankets and other items, Orange County residents can call 409-886-0938.
