VIDOR —
Not only does Santa Claus like his red sleigh, but he is apparently a big fan of classic automobiles too.
The Vidor Classic Christmas Cruise was held this past Saturday in the parking lot of Capital One Bank, located on North Main Street in Vidor, and featured several dozen classic and vintage automobiles, as well as several much newer but equally impressive models.
The event, sponsored by the Vidor Chamber of Commerce, is held annually to spread Christmas cheer across the community but also to raise toys and funds for the Vidor Police Department’s Blue Santa Program.
“Even though the weather wasn’t great, we still had between 100 to 120 cars participate,” said Amber Woodard, executive secretary of the Vidor Chamber of Commerce. “Not all of them cruised the street and the rain earlier in the day did keep some of the cars away, but it was still a great turnout.”
Less than favorable weather impacted much of Southeast Texas in the early afternoon, but since the chamber’s event did not begin until 2 p.m., the impact on the cruise was minimal.
“It affected our vendors who were trying to set up, and attendance was a little slow early, but the crowds were really good throughout the afternoon and evening,” Woodard added. “A lot of people lined Main Street to watch the cars cruise up and down the road.”
Several dozen toys were donated to the Blue Santa program, as evidenced by the overflowing donation barrel and bags of new toys surrounding it.
Woodard said several people also made cash donations to the Blue Santa program, and one of the vendors, the Smokin’ Aces barbecue team, was donating a percentage of its profits back to Blue Santa as well.
