BCISD, Vidor ISD attendance figures on the rise

BRIDGE CITY — School is back in session in Orange County, and attendance figures are mixed.

All five Orange County schools returned from summer break this past Monday. Vidor ISD and Bridge City ISD are both showing increases in student attendance through five days of instruction.

The Bridge City Independent School District has the largest increase in student attendance, according to district figures. A total of 2,725 students attended class on Friday, which is an increase of 80 students compared to the 2,645 in class on the fifth day the previous year.

The largest noticeable gain was at Bridge City Elementary, which had 748 students in attendance on Friday. The is 55 more children than in attendance at the campus on the fifth day of instruction in 2011.

“We are really excited about our student numbers,” said Superintendent Mike King. “We’ve had such an increase at elementary that we had to hire an additional teacher to meet the need. It’s a testament to the Bridge City community and Bridge City ISD to have so many people back in our district.”

The Vidor Independent School District had a total of 4,943 children in class on Friday, the fifth day of instruction. This is an increase of 15 students compared to the fifth class day the previous year.

“We’ve been up each day of the week, and that’s a good sign,” said Dr. Jay Killgo, Vidor ISD superintendent. “We were up a total of 33 students on the first day, and we’re ahead by 15 students (Friday). As good as that is, I would like to see us get back to the 2003-2004 figures when we had 5,158 students enrolled. We are still pretty far off, but we’re improving.”

Three of the school districts - West Orange-Cove CISD, LC-M CISD and Orangefield ISD - are showing decreases in attendance according to attendance figures provided by respective district.

The West Orange-Cove Consolidated Independent School District had a total of 2,311 students in class on Wednesday, it’s third day of instruction. This is a sizable decrease from the 2,406 students on the third day of class the previous school year.

In year’s past, the district has found its attendance figures increase significantly following the Labor Day holiday, and the trend is expected to continue.

Orangefield ISD had 1,707 students in attendance on Friday, a decrease of 17 students compared to the 1,724 students on the fifth day of class one year ago.

“We’re a little under where we were last year, but, historically, we tend to pick up another 15 to 20 students following Labor Day,” said Dr. Stephen Patterson, Orangefield ISD superintendent. “I don’t know what it is about Labor Day, but it always seems to be the case.”

The Little Cypress-Mauriceville Consolidated Independent School District had a total of 3,419 in attendance on Thursday, the fourth day of instruction. This is down considerably from the 3,544 on the fifth day of class the previous year.
