VIDOR —
The long awaited unveiling of Vidor Lions Veteran’s Park is finally here.
The Lions Club of Vidor will hold a dedication and grand opening ceremony for the Vidor Lions Veterans’ Park “Field of Freedom” at 1 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 11. The park is located at 750 E. Freeway at Claiborne Street adjacent to the Raymond Gould Community Center.
The event will be held rain or shine and guests may park in the community center parking lot or in the across the street and east of Veterans Park.
The park features the granite monument “Fields of Freedom,” which was installed earlier this week, and was designed by artist Ray Simon.
Sculptor Scott Stearman, who designed the “Gratitude” centerpiece, will be in attendance at Sunday’s ceremony, and the event will feature retired Gen. Hiram Hale Burr Jr. of the U.S. Air Force, a Vidor resident, as the guest speaker.
The Orange Community Band will perform as well.
The project has spanned more than three-and-a-half years in planning and construction at a cost of approximately $200,000. The park already includes the U.S. and Texas flags, as well as a flag representing each military branch and the POW flag next to the 3-foot x 7-foot monument which displays the painting for the which the park is named.
The Wall of Honor includes the names of people, from not only the Vidor-area but from across the region and the U.S., who have served in the military for their country.
The park also includes large, granite pavers which line the pathway and a beautifully constructed bridge provides access from the parking lot to the park.
