A familiar face was missing at this weeks Commissioners Court meeting on Monday.
County Judge Carl Thibodeaux was out of town. John Dubose, commissioner, pct. 3 ran the meeting.
Owen Burton, commissioner pct. 2, asked questions concerning a $2,565 bill to East Texas Regional Water Planning Group for 2012 and 2013 membership dues.
The court agreed to table the paying of the bill until further information could be gathered to clarify information of the purpose of the bill.
The court discussed the old Justice of the Peace Three building located on Roundbunch Road. The building has been vacant since Hurricane Ike. A person has expressed an interest in leasing the building for extra storage for a nearby business. The items that could be stored there included chemicals and equipment.
A main topic in the discussion was concern for county liability in case of anther flood.
“I believe it is not in the flood plan,” Jeff Kelly, emergency management coordinator, said.
The item was tabled until further discussion at a future workshop meeting.
Commissioners also rejected two bids on trust properties.
One location has been held by the county in trust since November 2010. This is the third round for bidding.
“I just think it is worth more,” John Dubose said. “The bid went up $500 since the last round.”
The highest bid for the one and a half lots was for $3,000. The lots on either side of it are appraised at a minimum of $10,000.
The second property has only been in trust since August 2012. The bid was 31% of the value of the property, however the court felt the bid was too low for the location.
County offices will be closed on Monday in observance of Veteran’s Day.
Thibodeaux will be leaving that Tuesday afternoon to attend Judicial School. County Judge and Commissioner must attend 16 hours of classes for the respective positions each year.
The next Commissioner Court meeting will be 10 a.m. on Tuesday, November 13, at the Orange County Administration Building at 123 South 6th Street in Orange.
