County Engineer Clark Slacum offered a proposal to Commissioners Court offering a way to save the county more money - extending electrical service to the Orange County collection site for operating compactors on site.
“We tried using a side loading compactor but the opening was not very large,” Slacum said. “Having two open top compactors would allow us to accept oversize debris as well.”
Slacum said the use of two open top compactors would also mean reducing the number of the open top dumpsters currently used from eight to two.
It costs the county $319 to have just one of current dumpsters emptied. An open top compactor costs the county $340 to empty.
“An open top compactor can hold four un-compacted open top dumpsters,” Slacum said.
The current cost to operate the collection site is $265,408 per year. Under Slacum’s proposal the cost would be $144,272. That would save the county $121,136 each year.
The installation requirement costs to extend electrical service to the area is $8,549.22.
The collection site operates two days each week, Wednesday and Saturday from 7 a.m. - 3 p.m. or the dumpsters are full.
The County operates this facility at no charge to the residents of Orange County.
