ORANGE —
A concerned caretaker called Orange Police Department for the welfare of an elderly woman at the 1400 block of Orange.
The woman had a bruise on her face when officers arrived at approximately 11:30 a.m. Thursday.
A police report states the woman said her granddaughter struck her for calling the paramedics earlier in the day.
The granddaughter claimed her grandmother was struck by the phone when they struggled over it.
The older woman is confined to a wheelchair.
When the younger woman was asked to get dressed because she was under arrest, she refused.
When the granddaughter walked past the older woman, she stepped towards her.
The officer blocked the young woman’s path and witnessed the older woman flinch and cover her face with her arms.
The granddaughter was arrested for injury to an elderly, a class 3 felony, and family violence.
Signs of elder physical abuse are:
• Unexplained signs of injury such as bruises, welts, or scars, especially if they appear symmetrically on two side of the body
• Broken bones, sprains, or dislocations
• Report of drug overdose or apparent failure to take medication regularly (a prescription has more remaining than it should)
• Broken eyeglasses or frames
• Signs of being restrained, such as rope marks on wrists
• Caregiver’s refusal to allow you to see the elder alone
Many seniors will not report abuse for fear of retailiation.
