ORANGE —
It’s July and that means its rodeo time in Orange County.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Posse Rodeo returns this month for another exciting weekend of rodeo action on July 20 - July 21. The family-oriented event will take place in the Posse’s Rodeo Arena located on FM 105, approximately one-half of one mile east of State Highway 62 in Orange. The action begins at 8 p.m., Friday, July 20, and 8 p.m., Saturday, July 21. Admission is $8 for adults and $4 for children ages 12 and younger.
Popular rodeo events such as bull riding, junior bull riding, barrel racing, steer wrestling, team roping, breakaway and tie-down roping will thrill rodeo fans with plenty of excitement, thrills and, oh yes, spills.
The family-oriented rodeo also offers plenty of laughs with the outrageous calf-dressing event, where teams strive to be the first to dress a calf in women’s undergarments and get it to the center of the arena. Kids events include the always popular calf scramble and lamb scramble, and, this year, prizes are available including a new bicycle, and tickets to Schlitterbahn and Moody Gardens.
This year’s rodeo also offers something new for patrons as live music returns to the Orange County Sheriff’s Posse Rodeo for the first time in many years. Local country music group Shawn Newell and Straight Six will perform at 6:45 p.m., Saturday, July 21, and patrons are encouraged to stay after the rodeo for more live music from the band.
Funds generated from the annual rodeo help the organization to cover the costs of the event itself, but most of the money generated from the rodeo is used to fund scholarships for area graduating high school students on behalf of the Gus Harris Memorial Scholarship Committee.
