BC students make Christmas donation for animals
BRIDGE CITY — Kim Sensat’s fourth grade class at Bridge City Intermediate School decided they wanted to do something different for Christmas this year.
Sensat and her class contacted Tracy Miguez of Bridge City Public Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) and informed her the class had decided to help the animals of this worthy organization for Christmas by donating food and needed supplies.
Bridge City PAWS was created in 2007 by Miguez’s daughter, Sydney, following Hurricane Rita.
“It was really a surprise when we learned this class wanted to donate to the animals,” Sydney said. “It made me so happy knowing someone else wanted to help these animals as much as I do.”
Sydney, who is now 12-years-old, had toured the Bridge City Animal Shelter following the Hurricane Rita and recognized how in need of repair and upkeep the facility was and how few animals it could house because of these conditions.
In 2008, with the help of the community, Bridge City PAWS was able to help the animal shelter with much needed repairs and make improvements to the facility, which, in turn, provided better care for the animals.
Unfortunately, as with much of Bridge City, the animal shelter was heavily damaged by Hurricane Ike’s storm surge and is again in need of repairs.
“Hurricane Ike stained the walls and left mud all over the floor and damaged some of the fencing,” Sydney added. “Now the shelter needs our help again.”
Which is where the most recent donation will help because the animal shelter only receives limited funding from the City, so those funds might be better used for repairs or other needs.
“We received a lot of food from the fourth grade class, but we also received toys, treats, shampoo and even a small dog bed,” Sydney said. “We will be taking all of this stuff to the animal shelter soon so they can have it for the animals.”
