DEWEYVILLE — If April showers bring May flowers, then what does a fall flood bring? In the case of Deweyville ISD, a shortened Christmas break.
While students across Southeast Texas began their respective Christmas breaks at the end of class last Friday, students in the Deweyville Independent School District had to attend class Monday and today because of lost class time due to flood conditions in November.
In early November, the Sabine River flooded many low-lying areas of Deweyville and forced the school district to be closed for seven instruction days.
According to Rick Summers, superintendent of Deweyville ISD, the Texas Education Agency (TEA) granted DISD a waiver for five of the seven missed class days.
“We feel very fortunate that TEA only required us to make up two days of the seven we missed,” Summers said. “We went back to our site-based committee, and we just felt like this would be the best time (to make up days) and then we wouldn’t have to worry about it the rest of the school year.”
Summers said Monday’s attendance rate for the district’s three campuses was 94.7 percent, which he was quite pleased with considering the circumstances.
“Some people probably had to alter their holiday plans, but it could have been much worse,” Summers explained. “This way it will be over and done with and we don’t have to worry about cutting days elsewhere, like spring break or whatever.”
In an attempt to help students cope with the additional days of instruction, Summer said many of the traditional end-of-week activities prior to the Christmas break were moved to Monday and today.
“It was just a way to help soften the blow of having to come to school (Monday) and (today),” Summers added. “Hopefully our attendance will be as good (today) as it was on (Monday).”
Deweyville ISD schools will dismiss early today for Christmas break and classes will resume on January 4, 2010.
