An Orange County man was sentenced Wednesday after he failed to comply with keeping his sex offender registration up to date with officials.
Vernon Ray Strong, 56, was sentenced to 6 years in prison for the third degree felony of failure to register as a sex offender in the 260th District Court with Judge Buddie Hahn presiding.
Orange County Sheriff’s Office officials were initially unable to locate Strong.
After information was released about him and his status, people began calling Crime Stoppers and the sheriff’s office. With the help of tips from the public, investigators were able to locate him living on a church’s property in a trailer.
Strong last registered with the Vidor Police Department in November 2007.
Strong was found guilty in 1987 of the aggravated sexual assault of a four-year-old girl and an 11-year-old girl. He was sentenced to 12 years in prison, according to information from the Texas Department of Public Safety website.
Sex offenders are required to register within the city where they reside. However, if they choose to move to another residence in another city or state, they have seven days to inform the primary registration authority where they resided. If they place to which they are moving is in another state, they have 10 days from the date of arrival to register.
Registered sex offenders are also required to verify registration annually, every 90 days or every 30 days as indicated on their registration form.
Sex offenders are also required to report status changes such as place of employment, physical health, name changes and educational status, according to TDPS.
