DEWEYVILLE — With Christmas less than two weeks away, one small organization is making sure children in this small Newton County community have a Merry Christmas too.
The seventh annual Deweyville Toy Fest will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., today, at the Deweyville Community Center, which is located behind the Newton County Sub-Courthouse on Spur 272 in Deweyville.
According to Faye Hryhorchuk of the Deweyville Toy Fest fundraising committee, there are children in Deweyville who could be left out this holiday season.
“We’re so far from Newton, it is really hard for people in our area to get help for their children from agencies here, like the ones in Orange County,” Hryhorchuk said. “That is why we started this event seven years ago.”
Hryhorchuk said the organization receives its list of families and children in need who are ages infant to 16-years old from churches in the Deweyville area. In 2008, the group assisted 36 families.
“Last year was probably our worst year ever for toy donations,” Hryhorchuk added. “The first few years we started were really good, until Hurricane Rita hit. Then we had another couple of good years until Hurricane Ike last year. We’re just hoping we are due for another good year.”
Hryhorchuk said the group is asking for new, unwrapped toy donations for younger children and more age appropriate items for older children and teenagers.
“People typically want to buy toys to help programs like this, but not much for older kids,” she added. “That is where we come up short, so we are always looking for cash donations to help us take care of them.”
Hryhorchuk said the program attempts to make sure each child receives at least three quality toys for Christmas and hopes it receives enough donations on Saturday to do just that.
“Regardless of the weather, we will be collecting toys and cash donations this Saturday,” she continued. “We just hope enough people can find time to help us assist the children and families in need in the Deweyville area this Christmas.”
