Jaycees announce parade marshal
The Orange Jaycees are thrilled to announce that the Grand Marshal for this year’s Christmas Parade is Skipper Free.
A lifelong resident of Orange, she was born in Shangri-La on the Day of Epiphany. In World War II, Skipper entertained troops at VA Hospitals in Jonesville, La. and Houston, Texas. She and Gordon Baxter once had a nightclub act, and she was a hair stylist in Orange for many years.
The 61st Annual Christmas Parade is at 6:30 p.m., Friday, Dec. 4. It begins at the MacArthur Shopping Center, proceeds along Green Avenue, turns right on Fourth street and disbands at Front Street. Participants should have a prearranged pickup point downtown.
This year’s parade theme will be: “A Toyland Christmas.” Entrants and spectators are encouraged to bring as many new unwrapped toys for local children as possible, and bring them to the reviewing stand in front of City Hall. Please remember that “Jesus Is The Reason For The Season.”
The parade chairman is Jimmy Grimes, Jr. For questions and info you can call him at 779-9199 or call Hank Van Slyke at 886-4505.
Since the parade is held at night, entries are encouraged to have plenty of lights on them. By request of the Police Department, no candy is to be thrown from the floats. The Jaycees will sponsor the only Santa Claus.
First and second place trophies will be awarded in four categories: Marching, General, Commercial, and Religious Theme. Bands will receive a participation trophy. Three "Judges’ Choice" trophies will be awarded to the judges’ favorites, and the Grand Marshal will award a special trophy to the best overall entry.
To enter the parade, the Jaycees need the category and size of the entry, the name and phone number of a spokesman, and whether music is involved in your entry (so you won’t be placed next to a band or a fire engine). Entries may be sent to: The Orange Jaycees, P.O. Box 1521, Orange, Texas 77630. Entry forms are available at R & R Auto Supply on MacArthur Drive, Artcraft Printing on Western Avenue and at the Orange Chamber of Commerce at 10th and Green.
