Local church helps others for Thanksgiving

ORANGE — One local church is thankful for what it has this Thanksgiving, while also making sure several local families have a happy Thanksgiving.

Members of the Missionary and Stewardess Department of St. Paul’s CME Church in Orange spent most of the day Tuesday organizing and delivering foodbaskets for 10 families just in time for Thanksgiving.

The food basket donations are part of the “Being Thankful” week program at the church, which culminates with a special 11 a.m. service, Sunday, at the church, 1201 Fourth St., with special guest speaker Rev. Charles Godfrey, pastor of Community Christian Center in Minnesota. The church members will also be at Greater St. Paul Christian Fellowship Church at 5 p.m., Sunday.

“This is part of our Missionary and Stewardess outreach program,” said Ann Cartwright, president. “We try to do this every Thanksgiving, and this year we are able to bring food baskets to 10 area families for their Thanksgiving meals.”

The food baskets contain a variety of canned food items, such as peas, corn, green beans, as well as cranberry sauce, stuffing, corn bread mix, salad dressing, eggs, corn meal, and a chicken.

St. Paul’s CME Church, like many other churches on the East Side of Orange, sustained extensive damage due to Hurricane Ike’s storm surge in Sept. 2008. The church family returned to its home earlier this year after spending several months worshipping with Greater St. Paul Christian Fellowship Church, led by Bishop R.C. Young, and has resumed its tradition of helping those in need of assistance.

“God brought the church back and we are so thankful,” Cartwright explained. “We know what it is like to need a little help, and that is why we are helping these 10 families have a happy Thanksgiving.”

The members of the St. Paul’s CME Missionary and Stewardess Department will resume its outreach program in December when church members once again gather food baskets, but this time for area nursing homes.

Church volunteers will also be collecting new items such as socks, blankets, and other necessities for individuals at these assisted living facilities.
