Birch makes sure they are all dolled up
For about 25 years, Ruth Birch has been making doll clothes for the Salvation Army.
After a Doll Tea where prizes are awarded, the18-inch dolls are then given away to girls who are participating in the Angel Tree Christmas program. Some lucky little girl will have a very special doll or bear on Christmas.
Birch, 73, says she enjoys making the dresses. In past years she has made bridal outfits as well. About 5 years ago she was awarded with the title of grand champion during the Doll Tea at the Salvation Army.
Birch, who has been the Pastor of Harvest Chapel for 9 years, said the ladies group meets on Tuesdays for lunch and Bible study. Afterwards they form an assembly line with some women ironing while others sew or put the clothes on the dolls. Most of the women in the group are in their 70s to 80s, but a great time is had by all.
“We just have always done it,” Birch said. “It’s like God’s hand extended to those in need.”
This year the group has done about 100 dolls, Birch said.
The material is donated by the women of the church. Some of the dolls are dressed in pajamas while others wear jumpsuits and dresses.
When not doing doll dresses, the group makes about 100 bibs for area nursing homes.
“We stay busy for the Lord,” Birch said.
In addition to dolls, the Salvation Army has included bears. They would like for others to be a part of all the fun and excitement this year. All of the dolls and bears must be completed and turned in to the Salvation Army by December 7. According to Major Linda Queener, they have about 70 dolls still needing clothes.
Trophies will be awarded for the grand prize winning doll or bear. In addition there will be first, second and third place ribbons given in each category. This year the categories are, wedding, period, formal, Sunday best, casual/sports wear, sleep wear and costume.
Any individual or group wanting to participate can contact the Salvation Army at 409-883-4232.
