ORANGE —
The Salvation Army is hosting a new fundraising event which combines a great hobby with a worthy cause.
From noon until 8 p.m., Saturday, the Salvation Army will hold its first ever “Scrapbooking for Food” fundraiser inside the Salvation Army building, 1950 Martin Luther King Drive at the corner of Strickland Drive in Orange.
The cost is $25 per person and includes an evening meal. There will be door prizes, page prizes, games and even a grand prize will be given away. All proceeds benefit the Salvation Army.
According to Maj. Linda Queener of The Salvation Army in Orange, the purpose of the event is to help restock the organization’s food pantry so it may continue to assist those in need.
“We’ve had a hard time keeping food in our pantry,” Queener said in a telephone interview. “The food is going out just as fast as we stock our shelves.”
Twice a month a scrapbooking group meets at the Salvation Army to work on their craft. Queener said this is where the idea came from.
“There are a lot of people who enjoy making scrapbooks or keep a scrapbook,” Queener explained. “The idea of the class is to show people how to make their own or, if they already know, show them different things they can do.”
Queener said there will be several classes held throughout the day for individuals, most of which are free, but one or two will have a minimal cost associated with it.
Queener said there is a class for beginning scrapbook enthusiasts, which will teach a person the basics to scrapbooking. Other classes include “How to Build a Scrapbook,” “ Scrapbooking with a Paper Bag,” “Learn to Make Cards,” and “Stamping Up.”
Queener said supplies will be provided for classes, but participants in the scrapbooking event should bring their own photographs and equipment and other supplies they feel are needed.
“We will have a swap and trade table available at the event too,” she continued. “People will be able to trade for or obtain whatever items they might need.”
Pre-registering for Saturday’s scrapbooking event is recommended, but not required. A $10 fee is required to pre-register and the remaining amount is due at check-in on Saturday. Participants may also pay upon arrival Saturday.
Teenagers are welcome, but must be accompanied by an adult. No child care will be provided.
“Our scrapbooking group really enjoys this activity,” Queener said. “It lets us preserve memories and is a great way to meet people. It’s a lot of fun too.”
