VIDOR —
The city of Vidor has a new city manager.
Councilmembers unanimously approved the hiring of Mike Kunst as the new city manager of Vidor by a 4-0 vote on Thursday night, which fills a position which has been vacant for nearly one year.
“I’m really excited about this opportunity,” Kunst said. “I’m a Vidor graduate, and I still live here. I have some familiarity with the people and the community and I think that is important. I understand their concerns, like those who want zoning and those who don’t, or why a park would be good for the community.”
Kunst will have a starting salary of approximately $78,000 per year. He will also get a car allowance and cell phone allowance. He will have his first evaluation in six month.
“We set his evaluation period for the end of September to coincide with our budget process,” said Mayor Ken Crawford. “We will have evaluations every six months to how things are going and if he is reaching the goals we, as a council, have set for him. His salary increases will be based on that process.”
Kunst’s first day on the job will be Monday, March 4.
Vidor city council honored Montana Quirante, a Vidor High School senior, with a special recognition.
Mayor Ken Crawford read a proclamation on behalf of Vidor city council declaring Friday, March 1, 2013, as Montana Quirante Day in the City of Vidor. Quirante helped guide the Vidor Pirates to two consecutive football playoff appearances as quarterback and linebacker as the team compiled a 19-5 record over the past two seasons.
Quirante was also the recipient of the Willie Ray Smith Sr. Award for Offensive Player and for Defensive Player in mid-February, which makes him the only player in the history of the 21 year old award to receive both simultaneously.
In other news, Lorrie Taylor, City of Vidor finance director, announced the city will be seeking proposals for bank depository services.
“We are required to seek proposals every five years, and it’s that time,” she explained to councilmembers.
Taylor said the city will issue notice it is seeking proposals and has set a deadline of 10 a.m., Monday, April 1. The investment committee will evaluate all proposals and make a recommendation at the city council meeting on Thursday, April 11.
Councilmembers also unanimously approved issuing a permit to Hilcorp Energy I, L.P. to drill a well in the 4600 block of State Highway 12 and to enter into an indemnification and waiver agreement following a public hearing in which no one opposed the request.
