BEAUMONT — Dr. Carroll Thomas did not wait long it appears to attempt to move on from Beaumont Independent School District.
It has been reported by several media outlets Thomas has applied to become Commissioner of Education. The commissioner is the leader of the Texas Education Agency.
The commissioner is selected by Governor Rick Perry.
Thomas attended his last BISD meeting on Thursday night. He announced his retirement in January and his 16-year tenure as superintendent of BISD will end at the end of August.
Dr. Timoth Chargois will take Thomas’ place as superintendent.
Thomas’ tenure in Beaumont has been both praised and full of negative feedback from local residents.
He gained a lot of the criticism after BISD boardmembers made Thomas the highest paid superintendent in the state.
Thomas’ salary was a mere $152,800 when he first started with the district and grew to $340,000.
