ORANGE —
I have often quoted from various writings of Billy Graham.
They have served as an example to illustrate a point I wished to make. My wife and I had the privilege of attending his tent revival in Los Angeles in 1949 that launched his worldwide ministry.
I, along with untold thousands of others, have followed his life and ministry and hold him in highest esteem among all spiritual leaders. It is with pleasure that I evoke his name and wisdom today.
In the October 18, 2012 edition of the Wall Street Journal, I was surprised to see a face I recognized.
In a full page ad on page B3 is a full-faced picture of Mr. Graham and a short essay reflecting his feelings about the upcoming election. I checked the billygraham.org website and find that he wants this piece to be as widespread as possible.
He writes: “The legacy we leave behind for our children, grandchildren, and this great nation is crucial. As I approach my 94th birthday, I realize this election could be my last. I believe it is vitally important that we cast our ballots for candidates who base their decisions on biblical principles and support the nation of Israel. I urge you to vote for those who protect the sanctity of life and support the biblical definition of marriage between a man and a woman. Vote for biblical values this November 6, and pray with me that America will remain one nation under God.” Mr. Graham signed his name. At the bottom of the page it says, “Paid advertisement by the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association.”
A Scripture that comes immediately to mind says, “Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people” (Proverbs 14:34).
From various sources, I have heard that people from many different denominations are praying, and some will be fasting, on November 6 for God’s will to be done in the presidential election. It is something that people of any political party may agree upon: we need God’s guidance and wisdom for the Nation we love and the basic principles it promises for the welfare of every citizen.
“If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land” (2 Chronicles 7:14).
