The holidays are fast approaching and many people are already thinking of others and ways to make a difference.
Several area musicians will come together on Sunday, Nov. 11, at The Gig on Crockett Street in downtown Beaumont for the third annual “Food for Rock” concert benefiting the Southeast Texas Food Bank. The all ages event begins at 4 p.m., Sunday, and will feature performances by Bryce Shaver, Chris Edwards, Six String Mafia, Henly, Jenova, Avenge the Fallen, Simple Design, Lochness Mobsters and The Ruxpins. Admission is a $5 donation or five non-perishable items. Extra donations are welcome.
Local singer and songwriter Lee Pelly, also member of well-known local rock group Knuckle Deep and acoustic cover group, Six String Mafia, has organized this event each year and believes it to be a worthwhile cause.
“I started doing this event to help out the Southeast Texas Food Bank with donations, so they can help less fortunate families in our community have enough food for the upcoming holidays and throughout the year,” Pelly said. “I pretty much always do any charity event I’m asked to do, whenever I can. I feel if you are in a position to help out others, then you should.”
Pelly and his musician friends are no strangers to providing assistance to those in need. Seven years ago, Pelly heard about the Salvation Army’s efforts to provide fans to elderly residents in Beaumont but they were running out of fans, so he, along with Frankie Randazzo of Madison’s, came up with the “Boxfan Bash,” which is now an annual event.
“I remember seeing a story on TV a few years ago about how the Southeast Texas food bank was running low on food donations, and I felt a benefit might help them out, so we put the event together,” Pelly added.
Pelly thought the event might find some support through close friends and individuals with generous souls, but he never envisioned the support he has received from so many area musicians who willingly agree to donate their time and skills each season.
“It’s truly awesome to see local bands, businesses, and community come together to help out,” Pelly explained. “Southeast Texans have huge hearts and all they need is a reason to get together and make a difference. What better way than an awesome show with performances by great local musicians. I cannot wait. It’s going to be a blast.”
