BEAUMONT —
The LIT Foundation awarded five scholarships to students in the Department of Public Service & Safety at its annual Salute to the Real American Heroes event on Sept. 6, 2012.
The event was originally created to honor first responders and active military in the wake of the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
The scholarship recipients are:
Jimmy Bergt, homeland security. Bergt is 38 years old, has been married for 18 years and has two children with his wife Amber. With his parents in the military, he traveled the world as a child. After graduating from high school, Bergt enlisted in the U.S. Army.
Kyle Larose, emergency medical technology. Larose is 29 years old and a 2001 graduate of Bridge City High School. A veteran of the U.S. Air Force, he served in security forces, and has worked security in the entertainment industry and at NASA. His future goal involves becoming an anesthesiologist.
William Navarre, Regional Police Academy. Navarre, 24, served as an EMT for Statcare EMS, and taught CPR and EMT-Basic classes at Tarrant County Community College. He currently works as a chemist at Saybolt. He became interested in law enforcement after attending a Citizen Police Academy.
Heather Sears, criminal justice. Sears, 19, is a graduate of Ozen High School. She works at Tinseltown, and her future plans include becoming a psychologist at a federal prison.
Wesley Thibeaux, Regional Fire Academy. Thibeaux, 30, is a graduate of Ozen High School. He played for the arena football team the Texas Copperheads, as a defensive tackle and tight end. Since childhood, Thibeaux has had two goals: to play football and to become a firefighter.
