ORANGE —
Sales tax revenue figures continue to look promising in the early part of 2013.
Texas Comptroller Susan Combs has announced state sales tax revenue in January was $2.12 billion, up 6.1 percent compared to January 2012. Locally, sales tax revenue in Orange County increased more than $31,000, or 3.36 percent from the previous year.
The sales tax figures represent December 2012 sales reported by monthly tax filers as well as sales by businesses that report tax on a quarterly or annual basis.
“Growth in sales tax receipts was led by the construction, retail trade and restaurant sectors,” said Combs. “Receipts from oil and natural gas-related activity also continue to be strong. State sales tax revenue has now increased for 34 consecutive months.”
Combs will send cities, counties, transit systems and special purpose taxing districts their February local sales tax allocations totaling $741 million, up 4.6 percent compared to February 2012.
The western portion of Orange County continues to lead the charge in 2013 as showed modest to outright impressive gains over the previous year’s figures.
The City of Pine Forest arguably has the smallest tax base, but, for the second consecutive month, has shown a sizable increase in sales tax revenue. The city received a payment of $3,834.18 for February, an increase of more than $1,100 from the previous year. Pine Forest is more than 90 percent ahead of 2012 figures for the year -to-date.
Rose City had an increase of more than 15 percent for the month of February, or an increase of approximately $1,900. The city has seen regular increases in sales revenue since the arrival of the Greyhound Bus Terminal this past May and is currently 4.34 percent ahead for the year-to-date.
The City of Vidor will receive a sales tax payment of more than $239,000 from the State Comptroller this month, an increase of more than $5,600 from the previous February. For the year-to-date, Vidor is already more than $22,500 ahead of pace compared to 2012.
The City of Bridge City also showed a sizable increase in sales tax revenue for the month of February with a gain of 11.52 percent compared to February 2012. The city is nearly $20,000 ahead for the year-to-date as well.
The City of West Orange increased by 2.53 percent for the month, while the City of Orange was up 2.31 percent. Only Pinehurst was down this month and that was by less than $3,000.
