BRIDGE CITY —
A new year has arrived and Bridge City Fire and Rescue has a new chief.
James Fisette took his oath of office on Thursday night and becomes the new Chief of Bridge City Fire and Rescue. Fisette assumes the position previously held by Brent Morse, who was appointed by Fisette to serve as the department’s new assistant fire chief.
Fisette’s career as a firefighter and emergency responder spans more than two decades. This knowledge and experience will serve the Bridge City and Orangefield communities well.
“I got into the field during the summer between my sophomore and junior years of high school,” Fisette said. “Some neighbors got me involved in the junior fireman program and I loved it.”
Fisette has been involved with Bridge City Fire and Rescue, “off and on” as he said, for 23 years. He also serves on the Emergency Response Team at his “day job” at Total in Port Arthur and previously served in a similar capacity with INVISTA.
As Chief of Bridge City Fire and Rescue, Fisette already knows what he wants and expects for 2013.
“We’ve had a lot of improvement over the last few years and I want that to continue,” he explained. “I want to see more improvements with the technology and training we use, and possibly recruit some more members.”
Membership, according to Fisette, is a key component in continuing the success of Bridge City Fire and Rescue. With some members retiring and others choosing to leave for other jobs or moving away, he wants to continue building the department from the ground up.
“We really encourage and rely on our junior firefighters,” Fisette added. “It’s a good learning program. It teaches them responsibility and we don’t allow them to be put into harms way. They get some hands on experience and in a couple of years, when they get out of school, they can really be a big help.”
Fisette does not anticipate making any earth-shattering changes to the well-oiled machine that is the men and women of Bridge City Fire and Rescue. He expects to keep things as they are for the most part.
“Bridge City (Fire and Rescue) has always been well-liked within the community and in Orange County,” he said. “I want to maintain that reputation we have worked so hard to achieve.”
