The Dec. 10 Orange County Commissioners Court meeting marked the changing of the guard for the Orange County Historical Commission.
County Judge Carl Thibodeaux and the four commissioners approved a proclamation designating Monday in honor of Dr. Howard Williams, who recently stepped down from his position as historical commission chairman.
Precinct 1 commissioner David Dubose read the proclamation, which detailed how Dr. Williams, a World War II veteran, came to Orange and opened a medical practice 50 years ago, then developed a passion for local history and put all of his energy into both of these pursuits.
Williams served as chair of the OCHC for more than 20 years. During that time, the commission researched and documented more than 40 historical sites in the county that subsequently received state historical markers.
Williams also wrote two book on county history and maintained the definitive collection of historic photographs.
In a letter to the commissioners requesting the honor for Williams, new OCHC chairman Jerry Pennington said Dr. Williams “is synonymous with local history.”
Williams will serve as chairman emeritus of the commission, and he he won't stop researching and promoting county history.
“I will continue doing Orange County history until the day that I am history,” Williams said.
The commissioners voted to appoint Beau Henley and Angela Johnson as new members of the OCHC.
In addition to Pennington, the other officers of the commission are Betty Harmon and Nancy Peveto, vice chairs; Dorothy Meadows, secretary; and Karen Maddux, recording secretary.
Other appointees include Mark Dunn from Bridge City, and Granvel Block, Florence Craig, Dr. Robert Finch, John King, Mike Louviere, Wayne Prouse, Margaret Toal, Juanita Toronjo and Leslie Williams, all from Orange.
