The Orangefield Independent School District will have a big election this November, as nine candidates are seeking four positions, and one organization wants you to meet those candidates.
The Orangefield Classroom Teacher’s Association has announced it will hold a candidates forum from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Monday, Oct. 15, in the gymnasium at First Baptist Church, 9788 FM 105 in Orangefield.
“There are so many candidates in this election that people may not be familiar with all of them,” said Jan Davidson, event organizer and treasurer of the Orangefield Classroom Teacher’s Association. “Our goal is to let the candidates have the opportunity to express their views and concerns and let the public have the chance to become familiar with those candidates.”
This forum will consist of pre-determined questions being asked of candidates and will allow the community to become more familiar with the candidates and make more informed voting choices.
Seats up for grabs include Place I, Place III, Place VI and Place VII. Incumbents Donna Gail Ford, Place I; Susan Gunstream, Place VI and Thad Angelle, Place VII, have opted not to seek re-election.
Candidates seeking the Place I position include 40-year-old Juan Gonzales Jr., and 50-year-old Van H. “Bo” Henley.
Place III Incumbent Nancy Ashworth, 41, has filed to retain her seat on the Board of Trustees for another term, but she will be opposed by Jesse B. Fremont, who is 63.
Candidates Johnny Dorman, 62, and Ronald K. Risinger, 49, are both seeking election to the Place VI position.
The Place VII seat features three candidates seeking election this November in 43-year-old Brad Frye, 45-year-old Richard Durkin and 36-year-old Jason Guidroz.
“This event is not being sponsored by the school district,” Davidson said. “We just thought it was important to hold this event because we want to bring the community together and accomplish something positive.
“All of the candidates have been very receptive to the idea, and we expect most of them, if not all, to attend,” she added.
Early voting dates are Monday, Oct. 22 through Saturday, Oct. 27, and Monday, Oct. 29 through Friday, Nov. 2. Election day is Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2012.
