BC seeks small tax increase

BRIDGE CITY — City officials will hold a second public hearing in September on the proposed tax rate which will bring a small tax increase to city residents.

A second public hearing on the proposed tax rate will be held at the next regular City Council meeting at 6 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 4, at City Hall, 260 Rachal Ave. in Bridge City.

The proposed tax rate of $0.48700 per $100 valuation is less than a 1-cent increase over the 2011-2012 tax rate of $0.47775. Based on the value of a $100,000 home, taxes would increase $9.25 compared to the previous year, if the value of the property remained unchanged.

The average value of a homestead residence in Bridge City increased from $87,053 in 2011 to $89,930 this year, which means, based on the change in tax rate, a person can expect to pay as much as $22.06 more in property taxes to the City of Bridge City.

“We are going back up to the same rate we had back in 2009,” said Jerry Jones, City Manager. “This is the amount of money we needed to keep the budget balanced, and it’s basically the same budget we had from last year. It’s a bare bones budget. There’s nothing extra added. The increase will just help us cover the rising costs of fuel and electricity and a 3 percent pay raise for employees.”

Jones said the city likes to be fair to its employees and the 3 percent pay increase is the city’s way of doing that.

“We have less employees than most cities our size,” Jones added. “You’ve got to try to hold onto the good people when you’ve got them.”
