VIDOR —
West Nile virus has been confirmed in two more locations and another person in Orange County.
The Texas Department of State Health Services has confirmed a third mosquito collection has tested positive for West Nile virus with the latest being reported in North Vidor, east of FM 105.
The state agency also reported a second person is confirmed to have West Nile fever in Orange County. The first human case in Orange County was reported earlier this week in Vidor.
Patrick Beebe, director of the Orange County Mosquito Control District, recently said spray treatments have been increased in the area near where viral activity had been reported.
Follow-up test results of the area which was previously confirmed to have West Nile virus activity have all been negative, according to a press release.
The best way to prevent West Nile infection is to avoid mosquito bites. Wear long sleeves and pants at dawn and dusk – when mosquito activity is highest – and empty standing water from areas outside your home to discourage mosquito breeding. Most importantly, use a personal insect repellent, which the CDC recommends as a highly effective way to reduce further risk.
A total of 640 West Nile illnesses have been reported in Texas this year, along with 23 fatalities.
