ORANGE —
I can walk into any household in America and look at one seat in the house and be able to tell if the majority of the people living there, are male or female.
If the seat is in the up position, my guess is, it is a male, dominated household.
Do you see where I am going with this?
I grew up in a household with three males and two females and this was never a major issue in our family. There really is no right or wrong in this; it is truly the way you were taught, or the habit you were taught to use, that kept the household on a peaceful keel.
Let me say, I have a different habit now!
A habit is something acquired by doing it over and over.
John Wesley says there are Holy Habits.
Things that we are told as disciples of Jesus, that we should do over and over, until it becomes second nature to us. One of those habits is prayer.
Prayer is a priceless gift that God has given us, that I am afraid is like my computer. My computer can do fantastic things, create movies, art and brochures, but I use it to write sermons.
I use only one third of my computer’s capacity. There is so much more I could do, if I took the time.
In prayer, we have this powerful tool that Jesus gave us, but we under use it. To improve your prayer life, you don’t have to join a monastery. Simply take the vacant minded times you have and fill them with prayer.
For example, I pray while taking a shower and while driving. You can pray while walking the dog, or filling your gas tank. Pray for family, friends or the list of prayer concerns from your church.
My prayer is often by St. Francis of Assissi:
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love.
Where there is injury, pardon. Where there is doubt, faith. Where there is despair, hope. Where there is darkness, light. Where there is sadness, joy. O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled, as to console; to be understood, as to understand;
to be loved, as to love. For it is in giving that we receive. It is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life.
Amen.
