Entergy distributes fans to help beat the summer heat

PINEHURST — Elderly residents in need of a little heat relief may be able to find just that courtesy of the local electrical utility company.

Entergy Texas distributed dozens of fans at two Orange County locations on Thursday morning as part of its annual “Beat the Heat” program, which is now in its 12th year. Entergy typically donates hundreds of box fans, but upgraded to oscillating fans this year and added a new delivery location.

Entergy Texas delivered 120 oscillating fans Thursday to the Salvation Army location in Pinehurst and another 20 fans to the United Christian Care Center in Vidor. The fans will be distributed to those who qualify and are ages 60 and older.

“The heat in Southeast Texas can be almost unbearable at times, especially for those without air conditioning at home,” said Pam Williams, manager for customer operations support for Entergy Texas. “With the demand for fans growing every year, we are pleased to provide oscillating fans this year in order to help our customers remain as comfortable as possible.”

Capt. Michael Cox of the Salvation Army in Orange County was quite appreciative of Entergy’s efforts.

“With the heat the way it has been these past few days, these fans have come just in time,” Cox said with a smile. People have already been calling us and asking if we have fans for them or if we are going to get them,” Cox said. “Well, they are finally here and we will begin distributing them immediately.”

The Salvation Army is located at 1950 Martin Luther King Drive at Strickland in Orange. Hours of operation are 9 a.m. - noon, and 1 p.m. - 2 p.m., Monday through Thursday.

Ruby Sikes, director of United Christian Care Center in Vidor, was pleased Entergy Texas had included this Orange County community in its delivery route and was excited to begin distributing the fans.

“There is definitely a need for these fans with members of our community,” Sikes said. “We’ve already had people show up for them. We expect them to move very quickly once the word gets out.”

The United Christian Care Center is located at 293 Wilson St. in Vidor. Hours of operation are 9 a.m. - noon, Tuesday through Thursday.

The “Beat the Heat” program began in 2001. Since that time Entergy Texas has distributed approximately 14,000 fans to area residents in need of staying cool during the summer months.
