ORANGE —
Orange County Parks Department is ready to start removing the dead trees in the county parks.
Parks Director Donna Scales was scheduled to request approval from the Commissioners Court on Monday for the Road and Bridge Department to cut down and remove 12 trees at Gould Park in Vidor, 60 trees at Claiborne West Park, and 1 tree at Bluebird Fish Camp in Orange.
Scales asked the court to pass on the agenda item at this time.
“I will ask at a later date if we still need Road and Bridge to help,” Scales said. “I believe we can do it within our budget.”
Scales said that a recent event where a tree limb fell on a walker in the Vidor area prompted her to evaluate the trees in the parks.
“We see dead tree limbs on the side of the road all the time,” Scales said. “The public should be aware that dead trees need to be removed to prevent injuries to others.”
The state funded portion of the Orange County Convection and Expo Center is scheduled to be completed by Feb. 27. Delays pertaining to the installing of telephones will delay the county portion from being completed until March 27. The delays will prevent departments from being able to move into the new offices until April or May.
Orange County Commissioners Court approved the interest paid through the duration of the Tax Anticipation Note with Wells Fargo. The total paid for interest was $52,867.50.
“This is considerable less than the predicted $80,000,” County Judge Carl Thibodeaux said. “That is because we were able to pay the note before it reached maturity.”
The court also recorded into the minutes of the meeting the deposit from State Comptroller of Public Accounts in the amount of $438,611.06 which represent the 1/2-cent Sales and Use Allocation for the month of Dec. 2012.
“That is $48,000 more than last year,” Thibodeaux said.
The court approved the judge to sign the Advance Funding Agreement with TxDOT on the repair or replacement of the East Roundbunch Swing Bridge.
The court was also asked to approve the hiring of four positions: 1 custodial position and 1 Maintenance Tech position for the Maintenance Department, 1 part time driver and 1 dispatcher for the Transportation Department.
“We are down three positions from last year,” Mark Wimberly, maintenance director said. “We ask for patience with our department as we fill those positions.”
Orange County Commissioners Court will meet at 10 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 18. The meeting is being held at an earlier time due to commissioners attending Continuing Commissioner Education classes.
