ORANGE —
Today adolescence appears to be a holding corral of leisure with few responsibilities. Teens are not ready for the responsibility of marriage or raising a family, yet have the energy, knowledge, and passion to be involved in something of a magnitude that interests them. As I write this, CCS students are in homes, churches, and outdoor areas working hard and enjoying it. The Barna Group, which watches the Christian pulse of America, reports that Christian youth want to make a difference and are needing serious challenges, yet idleness seems to be forced upon them.
We will never pass a legacy on to them if we coddle them and expect too little. While leisure, money, and lack of focus seems to be what we think they want, the very opposite is true.
They will respond to responsibility, challenge and God.
In II Kings, Chapter 20, we read when Isaiah, the Prophet, told the great King Hezekiah to set his house in order for his sickness was unto death. The king turned his face to the wall and cried out to God who changed His mid and granted Hezekiah 15 more years to live. During that 15 years Hezekiah made a serious mistake causing Isaiah to come to him with another word from God. Hezekiah, you will live out your life in peace, but because of your mistakes, Babylon will end up with all of Judah’s temple treasures and wealth. Also your grandchildren and great grandchildren will become captives and slaves of Babylon. What was Hezekiah’s response? Since it won’t happen to me or in my lifetime and and God said it, “the word of the Lord is good.” For his own need he cried out to God, but when the lives of his grandchildren and the youth of Judah were threatened, he made no attempt to intercede. What kind of man is this? It sounds a lot like our credit card generation.
Our children don’t have to live without focus and purpose. We can cry out to God for the next generation. We can redirect their lives. God is still on the throne and responds to our impassioned prayers and efforts.
