ORANGE —
The postcard was from my Optometrist. It comes every January. I have spent countless hours in the patient’s chair of an eye doctor of one type or another, specialists in this or that. Many times I have been the guinea pig for medical students who need to see what it is like to look into the eyes of someone who was born three months early and whose eye did not finish developing or to see the effects that oxygen has on the eye when too much is given a child of such a tender age.
I was one of Dr. Baza’s first patients after graduating fifth in his class at the University of Houston School of Optometry. We were both in our 20’s. In fact, on my last visit we determined that he is one year older than I. After years of specialists, it was this young doctor who recognized that God had made a change in my sight. He could not explain it, but he ran with it. He was the first doctor to recommend eyeglasses, and with that I was well on my way to wholeness.
You see for the first twenty-four years of my life I was considered legally blind. Now for the kicker; when my eyes changed I went back to the eye specialist whose reply was: Yes. Your eyes have change but we cannot explain it. It may not last. When I asked about glasses they said that they still would not help me. That was when I found Dr. Baza.
What was the difference? Vision; his and mine. He didn’t give up on me and he was able to look at things in a new way. God wants us to look at life in a new way. Oh, we bemoan age and worship the young but the truth is that each day we live is another day closer to death. NO! Each day we live is a day closer to joy and healing and wholeness! Embrace the life you have but don’t forget to treasure the life to come.
2 Corinthians 4:16-18 So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.
