A local rock outfit is closing out 2012 in style.
Jenny and the Reincarnation will celebrate the end of 2012 and the arrival of the new year with a CD release party on Monday night at Tequila Rok on Crockett Street in Beaumont. Admission is $5 at the door, but a street pass, which allows access into multiple venues on Crockett Street, is also available for $25. Special guests include We Were Wolves, Octopoodle and Crystal Cloud.
The band is releasing its four-song EP, "Komodo" and thought New Year's Eve would make the perfect backdrop.
"It was mostly good timing on having the CD release party on New Year's Eve," admitted vocalist Jenny Carson. "It just fell right into place."
Jenny and the Reincarnation can trace its origins back to 2010 when guitarist and keyboardist Kurt Scoggins of Port Neches and Beaumont drummer McGarrity Stanley starting jamming with Carson, who is also from Beaumont.
"Those two have been playing together since they had braces and bad pre-teen attitudes," Carson said with a laugh. "I started getting into trouble with them through a mutual friend and we took the gravy train from there."
The band, which also features new bassist Jordan Wright of Nederland, has a variety of influences, which is obvious considering Carson's background as a vocalist. Although many people may recognize her as just one-third of the singing sirens known as Mad Maude and the Hatters, Carson is a very diverse vocalist.
"If someone only knows me through Mad Maude and the Hatters, then they have a lot to learn about me," she added. "People can expect a lot of heart and soul to come out of me no matter who I perform with. Those roots are deeper than any genre of music. I would describe the Reincarnation as big. It's entertaining, energetic, psychedelic even, but most of all it's big. And all of it is original."
Carson said the Pixies album "Doolittle" was a huge influence on her, which she described as "perfection," and set the bar for her as a vocalist and musician. She also cited the "Godfather of Soul," James Brown, as a huge inspiration.
Wright said his brothers Chris and John Frusciante have influenced him greatly, while Stanley cited drummer Steven Drozd of the Flaming Lips as an influence. Scoggins biggest inspiration is Paul McCartney.
The new disc was recorded by Drew Haught of We Were Wolves at The Shrimp Shack, a studio owned by a friend of the band, David Dishman. The recording, which features original bassist and still "close friend" of the band Tyler Thibodeaux, only took a handful of days to complete.
"My favorite thing about 'Komodo' is how it all flows together," Carson continued. "We're really proud of that and we have James Faust (The Ramblin' Boys) to thank for it. The CD art is incredible too, and we can't thank David Dishman enough."
Carson said she and the band feel positive about the new year and are excited for not only Monday's CD release party, but for what is ahead in the coming year.
"I think 2013 is going to be a good year for the Reincarnation," Carson explained. "We have a new bass player, so we are feeling pretty fresh. People who come to this show will see what we have been working on and why we feel this way.
"It's New Year's Eve, and we want to celebrate. We want people to feel free to dress for the occasion too. It's going to be a night of merriment and rock and roll," she added. And did we mention there is going to be a lot of confetti?"
