LIVINGSTON, Texas —
It was a another typical battle between the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Battlin’ Bears and the Livingston Lions in District 20-4A play.
The two teams have been involved in high-scoring affairs throughout the last several years and it was the Lions that held back the Bears 42-35 at Lions Stadium Friday night.
Livingston quarterback Chevoski Collins scored four rushing touchdowns and rushed for 142 yards on 15 carries to power the Lions (1-3, 1-0) to victory.
The Lions finished with 406 yards of total offense with 364 of it coming via the ground.
The Bears (1-3, 0-1) had 317 yards of offense, 177 in the air and 140 on the ground.
LC-M receiver Dalton Doyle had a huge night, hauling in six catches for 159 yards and two touchdowns. Bear tailback Alex Sezer dashed for 131 yards and two touchdowns on 22 totes.
Quarterback Caleb Harley completed 6-of-8 passes for 140 yards and two touchdowns while fellow quarterback Jake Sonnier also had a touchdown pass to Doyle.
The Lions snared a quick 7-0 lead with Collins scoring on a nine-yard keeper in the first period. The Bears evened things up with a five-yard Sezer dart for a score.
Collins opened up the second-quarter scoring by getting loose on a 34-yard touchdown scamper.
LC-M countered right back when Harley connected with receiver Billy Jones on a nine-yard touchdown toss.
Livingston went up again 21-14 will Collins scored on a five-yard keeper. However, Sezer was the equalizer, pulling the Bears even with a 50-yard touchdown burst.
LC-M defensive back Shea Richards made sure that the tie stood going into intermission when he picked off a Collins’ pass inside the Bear 20 with 0:45 left in the half.
The Lions put up two scores in the third period and held the Bears to only six yards of offense in the quarter.
Collins scored on a another five-yard run and Lions’ running back Marquis Thomas, who finished with 98 yards on 20 carries, scored on a two-yard blast to make it 35-21.
The Bears got back in it when Harley and Doyle teamed up on a 56-yard touchdown pass with 9:13 remaining.
Thomas countered for the Lions, putting them up 42-28 with a four-yard scoring scamper with 6:30 left.
The Bears trimmed the lead to seven with 3:04 left when Sonnier and Doyle teamed up for a six-yard touchdown pass.
The Bears will look to get back on the winning track when they play host to Port Neches-Groves next week.
