ORANGEFIELD —
Two teams will be trying to claw for their first win of the season Friday night as the Orangefield Bobcats entertain the Beaumont Kelly Bulldogs.
For the Bobcats (0-3), it will be their final tuneup before they open up District 21-3A play Sept. 28 at home against the Silsbee Tigers.
The Bobcats have played a brutal non-district schedule against playoff teams from last year that include East Chambers, Jasper and Newton. Newton downed the Bobcats 40-14 last week.
The Bulldogs (0-2) fell to Bridge City 35-0 last week and dropped a 60-21 decision to West Sabine in their first game of the season.
The Bobcats will try to subdue the Kelly defense with its power running game. Bridge City running back Ashton Hunter had 297 yards alone against Kelly last week.
Orangefield quarterback Eric Truncale leads the ground game with 249 yards and a touchdown on 41 carries. Tailback Carl Wiley has muscled his way to 200 yards and two TDs on 44 totes. Dustin Verrett (19-168-1) and Tyron Como (24-135-0) have been productive as well.
The Bulldogs will go up against a Bobcat defense that is allowing 386.7 yards an outing thus far.
Kelly has struggled early on, returning just three starters on both sides of the ball from last year’s TAPPS Division I state finalist team that went 11-4.
Quarterbacks Will Darling and Hunter Moore have combined to complete 18-of-42 passes for 168 yards.
Receiver Thomas Falgout is a go-to guy and has hauled in seven passes for 112 yards. Kelly has struggled in the running game, netting just 35 yards total in two games. Jahmaal Dumes is their leading rusher with 18 yards on eight carries.
