BRIDGE CITY —
Bridge City Coach Cris Stump is going to stop wasting time and simply will find a way to go ahead and put Coldspring on the schedule in the future.
Friday’s 7:30 p.m. Class 3A Region III bi-district game between the Cardinals and Trojans will mark the third straight year the two squads will meet up in this round.
Coldspring is 2-0 in the games with last year being a 7-0 win.
Coldspring enters the game with a 8-2 overall mark and went 6-0 in winning District 22-3A. The Trojans outscored their district opponents by an average score of 56.6-11.3.
Bridge City is 5-5 on the year and went 4-2 in District 21-3A to place third in the district. This year marks the first time in school history the Cardinals make the playoffs for the fourth time in four years.
Now the Cardinals want to get a win in the bi-district round but Stump knows the Trojans are as tough this year as they have been in years past.
“They are Coldspring,” Stump said. “They have a few guys back that we still haven’t blocked or tackled. They look like they always do. The good thing is we have no pressure. We can go in and let things fly and hopefully that is the way we play.”
A key game the Cardinals can look to is the Trojans 35-20 loss to the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Battlin’ Bears.
“Defensively they fly to the football,” Stump said. “On offense they have several guys who are a threat every time they touch the ball. It is going to be a big test and should be a good game. We cannot go in and not play a good game. If you play bad they are going to make you look stupid.”
Alfred Scott returns as quarterback for the Trojans and has thrown for 390 yards with five touchdowns and only one interception.
Coldspring relies on the run game of Trey Cooper who has 728 yards on 108 carries with six touchdowns.
Alec Dunham has 206 yards on 14 carries with Patrick Giddens and Scott each have four rushing touchdowns on the season.
So the Cardinals have one offensive highlight the Trojans do not being that Bridge City boasts a 1,000 yard running back.
Junior running back Ashton Hunter has bruised his way for 1,251 yards on 214 carries with eight touchdowns for the Cardinals. Kruz Dearboone has 219 yards on 58 carries.
Quarterback Daniel Faulk has thrown for 688 yards with nine touchdowns and four interceptions.
Adrian Schubarth leads the Cardinals with 13 receptions for 149 yards while Tanner Cervenka has hauled in 11 catches for 231 yards and the senior receiver has five touchdowns.
“The thing with our team is we always come back to work on Monday ready to work no matter if we won or lost the past Friday,” Stump said. “It felt good to accomplish a little history this past Friday and we enjoyed it over the weekend. This week is all about Coldspring and preparing for those guys. There are a lot of teams who would love to be in our position.”
The winner of this game will face either Houston Worthing (4-6) or La Marque (9-1) next week in the area round.
