BRIDGE CITY —
The Hardin-Jefferson Lady Hawks clinched a playoff berth and hurt the Bridge City Lady Cardinals’ chances Tuesday night in District 21-3A action at Cardinal Gym.
The Lady Hawks, currently in second-place in the 21-3A race, took down the Lady Cardinals in four games, 25-18, 25-17, 19-25, 25-17 to nab a playoff spot.
The Lady Hawks improved to 7-1 in 21-3A play, one game behind first-place Orangefield (8-0) while the Lady Cardinals dropped to 3-5 in district play, a game behind third-place Silsbee (4-4).
The Lady Hawks will visit Orangefield Friday with the 21-3A crown likely on the line while the Lady Cardinals host Silsbee in a pivotal match in deciding who will solidify the third-place playoff position.
Amanda Ashby paced the Lady Cardinal offense, powering her way to a team-high 11 kills.
Hannah McAnelly posted nine kills for the Lady Cardinals while Alexus Henry had seven and Jessi Glover six.
Baili Thibodaux served the ball well for Bridge City as she collected 14 service points to go along with four aces.
Olivia Bass had eight points and two aces. Sarah Acosta notched six points and an ace. Destiny Ewing had five points and two aces while Henry also contributed five points.
H-J’s Taylor Thomas was dominant at the net, especially down the backstretch. Thomas finished with a match-high 14 kills and added seven points.
Allie Roby had a superb overall match for H-J. She claimed 12 kills and had her service game working by scoring 20 points while notching two aces.
Kelby Sparks had seven kills for the Lady Hawks while Kaitlin McFarland notched six and Taylor Aldrich had five.
Carlee Means contributed 11 points, three aces and three kills. Aldrich added 11 points and an ace.
H-J spiked its way to a 20-13 advantage in Game One. The Lady Cardinals rallied back with five straight points to trim the margin to 20-18 but the Lady Hawks strolled away with the game’s last five points.
The Lady Hawks built a huge 17-5 lead in Game Two only to watch the Lady Cardinals, behind Ashby and McAnelly, storm all the way back to within 20-17. However, once again the Lady Hawks claimed the game’s last five points to seal it.
The Lady Cardinals built a nice cushion for themselves in Game Three with a 15-9 edge. H-J darted back in it with 10 of the next 17 points to get to within 22-19 but the Lady Cardinals forced a Game Four by tallying the last three points.
H-J built a big 18-7 advantage in Game Four behind the hitting of Thomas. The Lady Cardinals, scoring 10 of the next 17 points but the Lady Hawks were able to hang on for the victory.
