ORANGE —
Without question, the District 21-3A volleyball race is heading down the backstretch with two teams — the Orangefield Lady Bobcats and the Hardin-Jefferson Lady Hawks — dominating play still with the second half of the race in full gear.
Right now, Orangefield and H-J are solidly ahead in the standings. The Lady Bobcats (22-5, 8-0) sit atop the standings with the Lady Hawks (6-1) still in hot pursuit.
The third-place playoff spot certainly remains up for grabs. Going into tonight’s play, the Silsbee Lady Tigers (4-4) are just a half game up on the Bridge City Lady Cardinals (3-4) followed by the West Orange-Stark Lady Mustangs (2-6), the Hamshire-Fannett Lady Longhorns (2-6) and the Buna Lady Cougars (1-6).
Coach Becca Mathews’ Lady Cardinals can certainly help themselves this week with they host two big matches. Bridge City will host Hardin-Jefferson tonight and will have a big showdown at Cardinal Gym on Friday.
The Lady Bobcats will have a bye tonight and could just about wrap up the 21-3A title Friday if they can post a big win at home against Hardin-Jefferson.
The Lady Bobcats have just dropped one game in 21-3A play, winning 24 out of 25 of them.
Last Friday, the Lady Bobcats made a clean sweep of Hamshire-Fannett 25-11, 25-19, 25-16.
Jennifer McManus posted 13 kills, 12 digs and had six service aces. Rylie Granger notched 20 assists. Marisa Bishop had six kills. Haleigh Turley captured six digs while Morgan Moss had four kills and two blocks.
The Lady Mustangs will look to stay in the hunt when they welcome in Buna tonight. WO-S will have a bye on Friday.
In District 20-4A play, the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Lady Bears will look to end a four-match losing streak when they visit seventh-place Beaumont Central (1-8) tonight.
The Lady Bears fell to first-place Port Neches-Groves (9-0) at home last Friday 25-22, 25-14, 25-15.
Stats for the Lady Bears included Haylea Hearn 7 kills, and 10 digs; Kayleigh Roy 5 kills, 2 blocks and 2 digs; Demi Sheppard 4 aces, and 9 digs; Josie West 1 ace, 12 assists, and 5 digs; Jade Piper 1 ace, 8 digs, and 10 assists; Darby Strother 5 kills, 3 digs, and 1 block; Sarah Woods 3 kills, 4 aces, and 1 dig; Malayzia Winbush 2 kills, 3 blocks, and 2 digs; Savannah Fisher 5 digs; Kelsey Crowe 2 digs; and Maddie Posey 2 kills, 1 block, and 1 dig.

Also in 20-4A play this week, the Vidor Lady Pirates (0-9) will be seeking their first district wins when they host Livingston tonight and Lumberton on Friday.
