LITTLE CYPRESS —
Using superb mound performances by freshman starter Ryan Leckich and reliever Logan Ashworth, Port Neches-Groves held Little Cypress-Mauriceville’s bats in check as the Indians escaped Don Gibbens Field with a 7-2 District 20-4A victory Friday evening.
Leckich tossed 4 2/3 innings of no-hit ball until Bear Coby Roddy got a single with a hot shot past third base. Leckich went 4 2/3 innings, allowing the one-hit while striking out six and walking four.
Ashworth went the final 2 1/3 innings, allowing just one hit while fanning four and walking two.
Both teams stand at 1-1 now in 20-4A play after two games.
The Indians took advantage of four LC-M errors and timely hitting as they scored two runs in the second inning and four in the fourth.
Ashworth was the first batter up for PN-G in the top of the second and he reached after his fly ball was dropped in leftfield. Daniel Mullens followed with a walk from LC-M starter James Swan. After Yancey Foster sacrifice bunted the runners to second and third, Mason Vizena roped a two-run double to the centerfield wall.
PN-G snared a 6-0 cushion in the top of the fourth.
Mullens drew a leadoff walk and swiped second and Foster singled to left. Mullens eventually darted in to score on a wild pitch.
Dillon Hebert drew a walk and teamed up with courtesy runner Corbin Coy on a double-steal. Coy went home and looked like he was out after a nice tag by LC-M catcher Jacob Martin but he was clled safe by the umpire and the Indians led 4-0.
Swan left the game, pitching three innings. He allowed five hits while striking out five and walking four. Christian Wendt replaced Swan with no outs in the fourth.
Vizena drove in another run, scoring Hebert with a bunt single. With one out, Dylan Saatzer plated Vezina with a sacrifice fly to right to make it 6-0.
Wendt pitched two innings, allowing one hit while fanning one and walking one.
The Bears finally got to Leckich with Roddy’s base-hit in the fifth.
With two outs, Julian Edwards drew a walk from Lekich. Martin followed with a walk and Roddy loaded the bases with his sharp hit past third. That’s when Ashworth replaced Leckich on the Indian hill.
Swan, however, made it 6-2 in a hurry when he crushed a Ashworth offering with a deep double to left-centerfield.
The Indians added a run in the sixth.
Kaleb Clark drew a one-out walk from reliever Roddy and promptly swiped second and third base. Clark darted in to score off a Brack Presley RBI single to left.
Roddy worked two frames, allowing two hits while striking out four and walking two as the Indians finished with eight hits.
LC-M will look to get back on track Tuesday when they play host to 20-4A favorite Nederland.
