LITTLE CYPRESS — Clamping down on defense in the first half, the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears held off the West Orange-Stark Mustangs down the stretch to notch a 56-46 non-district victory at home at The Bear Cave Monday afternoon.
The Bears (11-6) jumped out to a 28-14 lead at intermission and led by as many as 19 points in the second half until the Mustangs (7-5) trimmed the margin to 46-37 midway through the third period.
Junior Hunter Gonzales had a superb game for the Bears, ripping off a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. LC-M junior post Preston Armstrong tallied 14 points and yanked down nine rebounds. Guard Johnny Epps contributed seven points to the Bear cause while Aldric Jones and Cameron Johnson added six points apiece.
Post Darius Davis powered the Mustangs with 13 points. D’Andrus Brooks-Gentry and Jarvis Jones pumped in 11 points apiece while JaKeenan Cotton contributed seven points and seven rebounds.
WO-S had problems solving the Bears defense throughout as the Mustangs finished with 29 turnovers.
The Bears led 16-9 at the end of the first period with Aldric Jones scoring all six of his points in the period while Gonzales had four.
The Mustangs managed just two field goals in the second period as the Bears outscored them 12-5. Armstrong bruised his way inside for six of his points in the period.
Gonzales and Davis dominated play in the third period with Gonzales popping for eight points for the Bears while Davis poured in seven as the Bears led 43-28 heading to the fourth quarter.
Jarvis Jones, who scored nine of his 11 points in the fourth, trimmed the Bear lead to 46-37 midway through the fourth with a deep three-pointer but the Bears were able to withstand the Mustangs’ final surge to hold on for the win.
The Mustangs finished with a 36-30 rebounding edge. Anthony Noble had seven boards for WO-S while Robert Redd hauled in six.
The Bears finished with 17 turnovers, nine coming in the final period.
LC-M finished 12-of-16 from the free-throw line while the Mustangs went 6-of-9.
The Mustangs will continue play tonight at Mustang Gym when they play host to the Kirbyville Wildcats and will ten participate in the Bridge City Tournament next Monday through Wednesday.
LC-M is off the rest of the week and will participate in the Barbers Hill Tournament next Monday through Wednesday.
