Jasper pulls off shocker over Orangefield

ORANGEFIELD — There were other teams playing Friday in the girls’ side of the Orangefield Tournament yet one game will stand out.

The Jasper Lady Bulldogs pulled off a major upset by defeating the host Orangefield Lady Bobcats 27-25.

The loss drops Orangefield to 9-2 on the season yet the Lady Bobcats will play for the tournament title at 3 p.m. today against HCYA.

HCYA took down Little Cypress-Mauriceville, 66-51, earlier in the day to reach the title game.

The Lady Bears will face Jasper at noon for third place and Nederland and Port Neches-Groves will square off at 9 a.m. for fifth place.

Orangefield struggled in one of its worst games in recent memory.

The Lady Bobcats could only muster up two points in the first period on a free throw from Kacy Juneau and another from Aimee Scales with 4:33 left in the first.

Jasper was able to tie the score at two with five seconds left in the first frame when Amdreia Carter hit a shot.

Orangefield’s first bucket of the game came from Rebecca Higginbotham.

Orangefield would outscore Jasper 8-5 in the second to take a 10-7 lead into the break.

The Lady Bobcats were able to build on the lead early in the third after Marissa Wyatt stroked a three pointer to make it 13-9 Lady Bobcats.

The Lady Bulldogs answered with six straight points to take a 15-13 lead.

Orangefield took its last lead of the night when Wyatt scored again to make it 16-15.

Jasper would lead 19-17 heading into the fourth.

Orangefield’s Aimee Scales scored four points of her team-high six points in the fourth, the final two coming with 1:05 left in the game to tie the score at 25-25.

Jasper’s Jocelyn Land answered with a bucket with :24 showing on the clock to make the final score.

Orangefield committed its 22nd turnover of the night to allow Jasper to hold on to the victory.

Scales added 11 rebounds in the loss while Wyatt had five points. Higginbotham finished with four points and four rebounds while Juneau had three points and three steals. Kasidy Hayes and Ashton Wagner each had eight rebounds for Orangefield.

Jasper’s Brandi Goff led all scorers with eight points and nine rebounds. Castle finished with six points and five boards while Breeunna Hafford had seven rebounds.

Jasper is now 4-4 on the season.

The Lady Bears were simply outmatched in their game against HCYA who led 24-11 after the first period.

Shelby Apperson scored a team-high 20 points for LC-M while Kalynn Harkness had 11 and Tiffani Thompson had eight points.

HCYA led 39-25 at the break and then outscored LC-M 20-15 in the third period.

The Lady Bears never quit and won the final frame 11-7.

McLead had a game-high 22 points for HCYA while Collins had 12.

HCYA was also a bigger winner over Nederland on Friday as it defeated the Lady Bulldogs 62-29.

HCYA led 18-5 after the first and was up 38-15 at the break.

Logan Leblanc had 11 for Nederland while Dostona had 17 for HCYA.

Jasper lost to PN-G before beating Orangefield on Friday.

PN-G won the game 52-44 behind 20 points from Caitlynn Dykes.

The Lady Bulldogs, who were led by Brandi Goff’s 11 points, led 30-18 at the break.

Then the Lady Indians went to action in the third by outscoring Jasper 20-6 to lead 38-36 heading into the fourth.

PN-G outscored Jasper 14-8 in the game’s final eight minutes.

Haley Savant had 10 points for PN-G while Paige Miller added eight.
