WEST ORANGE — Surviving an 8-for-27 performance from the free-throw line and a valiant late comeback by Deweyville, the West Orange-Stark Lady Mustangs took down the Lady Pirates 48-46 in the season-opener for both squads at Mustang Gym Tuesday night.
A rebound and putback by Ryshaniqua Winbush with 0:21 remaining gave the Lady Mustangs the lead for good and guard Demetrius Heard hit a free throw with 0:10 left to make it a two-point margin.
The Lady Bears tried to knot things up by going to superb post player Marley Moss with less than three seconds left but WO-S stole the ball and held on for the victory.
“Going 8-for-27 from the free-throw line is awful,” said Lady Mustang coach Callie Orebo. “They’re called free throws for a reason and we have to take advantage of it. They know what they’ll be working on hard the rest of the week.”
Heard led the Lady Mustangs with 18 points. Winbush had 10 points and eight rebounds and sophomore Jasmine MaGee added 10 points and six boards.
The Lady Pirates trailed by as much as 40-25. But sparked by Moss, Deweyville went on a 21-5 tear and took a 46-45 lead after a strong drive to the hoop by Moss with 0:32 remaining.
Moss finished with a powerful double-double, tallying 20 points while yanking down 13 rebounds.
“Our kids just scrapped and scrapped all the way to the end and I’m so pleased about that,” said Lady Pirate head coach Melanie Hamerly. “West range will be one of the most physical teams we’ll face all year and I thought the kids held their own with them. They can hold their heads up high. They probably played a 3A playoff team tonight and it’s something to build on.”
The Lady Pirates struggled as well from the charity stripe, going just 11-of-26.
“We both had our opportunities at the line,” said Hamerly.”Coach Orebo and I both will be stressing free throws in the next few practices.”
WO-S led 11-4 at the end of the first period, sparked by seven Heard points. The Lady Pirates got stingy in the second period and pulled to within 19-15 at intermission.
The Lady Mustangs went on a 21-12 tear in the third thanks to seven points by MaGee to grab what looked to be a comfortable 40-27 lead going in to the fourth. Maybe too comfortable.
“I thought we relaxed too early and started to take some bad shots,” said Orebo. “Give Deweyville credit, they kept battling and battling all the way to the end.”
The WO-S pressure bothered the Lady Pirates throughout.
Deweyville committed 23 turnovers while WO-S had just nine.
Mysheniqua Warnell led WO-S with 11 rebounds.
Guard Amber Stanley had seven points for the Lady Pirates while Skylar Webster had five. Kaycee Spears yanked down eight boards for the Lady Pirates.
The Lady Pirates return to action next Tuesday when they visit Kirbyville while WO-S will host Hemphill.
