ORANGEFIELD —
After a drama-filled week last week, the Orangefield Lady Bobcats will dive into the playoff waters yet again Tuesday when they take on the Huffman Lady Falcons in a Class 3A Region III bidistrict playoff game at 6 p.m. at East Chambers High School.
The Lady Bobcats (15-12, 7-5), the third-place team out of District 21-3A, will be taking on the Lady Falcons, the runnerups out of District 22-3A, for the third straight year in the bidistrict round of the postseason.
Orangefield will be hoping that their success continues against Huffman while the Lady Falcons hope the third time is the charm.
The Lady Bobcats have handled the Lady Falcons with ease the last two seasons.
Orangefield downed Huffman 63-47 in the same round last year and also blasted the Lady Falcons 75-35 in 2011. Orangefield will try to make it three in a row tonight under the guidance of first-year head coach and former Lady Bobcat standout Katie Sanders.
“The kids would love to make it three in a row but Huffman has a pretty good team,” said Sanders. “They have a go-to post girl in Christian Bardwell and they also have good point guard play. It should be a good game and I like ourt chances if we show up and play to our capabilities.”
The Lady Bobcats will lean on seniors like standout post Morgan Moss and feisty guard Kacey LeBlanc to pick up major points, rebounds and steals for Coach Sanders.
Moss, one of the most dominating post players in the area, scored 11 points against Huffman last year but has expanded her scoring prowess as a senior. LeBlanc scored a team-high 14 points in the 63-47 win over Huffman last year.
The Lady Bobcats also count on the outside shooting of Megan Burton and the outstanding defensive play by the likes of Paige Perales and Morgan Worthy.
The Lady Bobcats have been through some tough games in non-district and in District 21-3A play.
“At this point, our schedule definitely helps us,” said Sanders. “Our district play was tough, and the kids had to come through to win some tight, close ball games. That’s a big plus. I also know that I have a few seniors that have been here before and that always helps.”
The Orangefield-Huffman winner will face District 23-3A champion Houston Yates in the area round later this week.
The District 21-3A executive committee voted Friday to not force a play-in game between the Lady Bobcats and Hamshire-Fannett Lady Longhorns.
The decision came a day after speculation was reported Bridge City might have used an ineligible player in a win over Hamshire-Fannett.
It was possible the committee could have voted to say the Lady Cardinals used an ineligible player which would have forced the Lady Longhorns and Lady Bobcats to play a play-in game.
“The kids dealt with that situation well and they’ve been practicing hard since last week,” said Sanders. “They thought they would have to play Hamshire again and those practices were intense and the last couple practices have been all about Huffman. They’re excited and ready to go.”
In other playoff action this week, 21-3A runnerup Buna faced Cleveland Monday night while in 4A, Vidor took on Dayton.
Tuesday in Class 5A, Port Arthur Memorial meets Pasadena Memorial at 7 p.m. at Channelview High School. In Class 4A, Beaumont Central meets Humble Summer Creek at 6 p.m. at Lee College in Baytown. 20-4A champion Beaumont Ozen faces Kingwood Park at 7:30 p.m. at Lee College in Baytown while 19-4A champion Barbers Hill faces Lumberton at 7:30 p.m. at East Chambers High School.
