ORANGEFIELD —
Looking for their first win of the 2012 season and Josh Smalley era, the Orangefield Bobcats finally put all the pieces together in a 47-19 non-district win over Beaumont Kelly on Friday night at F.L. McClain Stadium.
Those pieces included a dominating run game with a bonus lightning strike in the form of two kickoff returns for touchdowns, pushing the game so far out in front of the Bulldogs there was no getting back into the mix.
“Starting out 0-3, we wanted to get a victory,” Smalley said. “More than anything, I wanted our kids to play hard. We want to win but we want to improve every week as we get ready for district.”
And now the Bobcats head into the first week of District 21-3A play with a game at home against Silsbee next Friday.
“Silsbee is good and we’re going to have to be prepared for what they are going to bring to the game,” Smalley said. “That’s why we play Newton, why we played East Chambers, why we played Jasper. We’re a little banged up but our guys are ready to get out there and play a district game. They’re ready to put it all out there on the field against Silsbee.”
As for Friday night, it didn’t take long for the Bobcats to show they were ready to take on Kelly. It took just 16 seconds for Eric Truncale to take the opening kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown. A blocked extra-point kick left Orangefield up 6-0. After three plays and a punt by Kelly, the Bobcats put together an 8 play, 75 yard drive that ended with Truncale scoring his second TD of the game, a 19-yard run. Again the kick failed, leaving the Bobcats up 12-0 just two minutes into the game.
Adding insult to injury, Orangefield turned the perfect onside kick into another possession on the ensuing kickoff. Four plays later, fullback Tyron Como bulled his way from 20 yards out. Carl Wiley added the two-point PAT for a 20-0 lead midway through the first quarter.
Having just run four plays in the game so far, Kelly finally got down to business on its next drive, moving from their own 25 to the Bobcats 19 thanks to some offensive heroics by quarterback Will Darling. It was a run by William Reese that spelled doom as the ball popped loose and Orangefield’s Colby Choate recovered to give the Bobcats possession at the 15.
Orangefield drove the length of the field but couldn’t get past the Kelly 19, opting for a 35-yard field goal to take a 23-0 lead with 9:49 left in the half.
Bolstered by a 30-yard kickoff return by Jahmaal Dumes, Kelly set up shop at their own 40 then proceeded to march the length of the field, scoring on a 17 yard pass from Will Darling to John Darling for a 23-6 difference.
The next time Orangefield touched the ball, Wiley went 94 yards on the kickoff return and David Rainey booted the extra point for a 30-6 advantage.
Kelly was unsuccessful on its next possession, turning the ball over on downs. With just seconds left in the half, Orangefield drove from its own 47 to the Kelly 20 where Rainey kicked a 38-yard field goal for a 33-6 halftime lead.
Kelly came out for the second half, initially looking like a different team, marching to the end zone for a quick score at 10:58 in the third quarter when Will Darling hooked up with John Darling again.
After trading punts, Orangefield got back to work on offense, scoring with 5:47 left in the third quarter when Carl Wiley scooted in from 7 yards out.
Kelly responded in kind, going 69 yards on four plays with Darling hitting Thomas Falgout for 30 yards and the score.
Orangefield capped its scoring when Truncale went 11 yards into the end zone with 43 seconds left in the third quarter.
Wiley finished as the top rusher with 138 yards on 18 carries while Truncale also completed a triple-digit rushing night with 118 yards on 11 totes. Como had 72 yards on eight carries.
Darling was the top producer for Kelly, throwing 16-of-22 for 22 yards and no interceptions. His top receiver was Falgout with six catches for 120 yards, while Allonte Wingate grabbed five for 55 yards and John Darling had three for 49.
