LITTLE CYPRESS —
After a bye week and one week before District 20-4A starts up, the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears will get a superb non-district test when they play host to the Coldspring Trojans, the No. 6-ranked team in Class 3A.
The Bears (0-2) battled Silsbee down to the wire a couple weeks back before falling 40-37 in a nailbiter.
The Trojans (2-1) are coming off a dramatic 27-21 victory over LaMarque. LaMarque was ranked No. 1 at the time. Coldspring’s loss came at the hands of 3A’s now No. 1 team in Navasota 36-8. The Trojans defeated C.E. King 21-13 in their opener.
The Bears will get a glimpse of a team that has been a thorn in neighbor West Orange-Stark’s side the last several years. The Trojans defeated WO-S in the playoffs 35-13 last year and 41-36 in 2009. The Trojans also advanced all the way to the 3A Division II state finals in 2010 where they fell to Carthage 46-22.
LC-M found its offensive groove against Silsbee, piling up 415 yards in the loss.
Tailback Alex Sezer now has 224 yards and two touchdowns on 39 carries after shredding the Silsbee defense for 187 yards on 24 carries.
LC-M quarterbacks Caleb Harley and Jake Sonnier have combined to complete 21-of-45 passes for 282 yards. They have two nice receivers to get the ball to in the forms of Casey Viator (11-130) and Billy Jones (4-62).
The Trojans, who returned seven starters on defense off last year’s 14-1 unit, limited LaMarque to 260 yards a week ago, paced by the likes of linebacker Patrick Giddens and defensive back Jerrell Sykes.
Quarterback Alfred Scott will be entering his 35th start for the Trojans and has led his team to a 30-4 mark.
Tailback Trey Cooper has close to 400 yards already this season. He rushed for 168 yards on 38 tough carries against LaMarque last week.
The Bears will open up District 20-4A play next week when they take a long trip to Livingston to face the Lions.
